Potty Training
|
Potty training a child can be extremely stressful, especially for new parents who get contradictory advice everywhere they turn. Fortunately though, potty training isn’t as difficult as it seems to be….if you follow some of these basic steps.
Potty Training Is For Baby And Parents
That’s right. Not only is this a learning experience for baby, both parents must agree that they will work together. This means they will use the same methods, the same words, as well as let any of their babysitters know exactly how they are potty training their baby. By staying on the same page, both parents and care givers can ensure that baby learns to use the potty quickly and without confusion.
Educate Your Child
The first step in getting your child to use the potty is by teaching them about their own bodies and how they work. Without getting too wordy or scientific, explain to your child what the feelings in their bowels or bladder are telling them. By keeping your explanations simple and using your “training words”, your child will be more willing to start using the potty on their own.
You’ll also want to bring your child into the bathroom as you go potty. Use this time to let your child know that it’s normal to use the restroom. Be sure to answer all of their questions in easy to understand language. Get them accustomed to being in and using the bathroom.
Get Your Child Involved
There are many different methods of potty training young children. Some parents like to use equipment, some prefer not to use anything at all. But one thing that you do need to get rid of is your child’s diapers. Take your child to the store and let them choose their underwear. If you want to use a potty, let them pick which color they want. By allowing them to make their own decisions, they will more readily accept the transition.
Reward Them For Doing Good
It is very important that your reward your child whenever they use the potty. Besides making them feel good, you will become more inclined to use the potty again. A popular and effective way to reward your child is with a potty training chart. Every time your child uses the potty or has a dry night, you place a sticker on the chart, which is encouraging and fun for potty training boys and girls.
You may not know it, but your child is as excited to learn how to potty train as you are…but you have to encourage them and make them feel comfortable with the process. When they see that other “big girls” and “big boys” use the potty, they want to do it to. Just remember to make it fun, make it stress-free, and your child will be potty trained in no time.
